Pacman Cheatsheet

The four pacman commands I actually use on Arch: install, clean the cache, uninstall completely, and prune orphans.

#arch#linux#pacman
  • Install: pacman -S package
  • Clean the whole package cache: pacman -Scc
  • Uninstall completely (including config files and unneeded deps): pacman -Rcns package
  • Remove all orphaned packages (pacman's equivalent of apt autoremove):
sudo pacman -Rcns $(pacman -Qdtq)

More that are worth knowing

  • sudo pacman -Syu — refresh the package database and upgrade every installed package.
  • pacman -Ss pattern — search package names and descriptions in the repos; pacman -Qs pattern — search the same way, but only among already installed packages.
  • pacman -Si package — show info about a repo package; pacman -Qi package — show info about a package that's installed locally.
  • pacman -Qo /usr/bin/vim — show which installed package owns a file.
  • pacman -Ql package — list every file a package installed.
  • pacman -Qe — list packages installed explicitly (the ones you asked for, not pulled in as dependencies).
  • sudo pacman -Sc — remove unused cached packages, keeping only the latest versions of what's installed; a gentler version of -Scc, which wipes the whole cache.
  • sudo pacman -D --asdeps package — mark a package as a dependency, so it shows up as an orphan if nothing needs it anymore; sudo pacman -D --asexplicit package — mark it as explicitly installed so orphan detection (-Qdt) skips it.
